The 2002 Mazda Protege ES is a relatively easy vehicle to maintain. The headlights are accessible by reaching behind the bulb housing and they can be removed without any tools, allowing for reliable bulb changes. The battery has unobstructed access to both the bracket and terminals, allowing for hassle-free replacements and jumpstarts. Changing the engine air filter won’t be a problem as the housing disengages without the use of tools.
However, the 2002 Mazda Protege ES does have its downsides. Multiple panels and the bulb housing itself must be removed for access to the tail lights, which won’t allow for reliable bulb changes. Changing the center brake light may be a problem, as well, on account of the awkward position you’ll be working in when prying up the bulb cover. The transmission dipstick will be challenging to reach from a deep position in the engine bay.
